U2 lit up Las Vegas over the weekend as they performed their new single — which is all about the city.
The band are showing no signs of slowing down as they gave fans a glimpse of the high-octane track, Atomic City, ahead of taking up residency at the MSG Sphere later this month.
Bono and the boys even took to the back of a flatbed truck to belt out various versions of their new tune as part of a music video shoot that took place on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.
The location was not far from where they filmed the video for I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For back in 1987.
It’s rumoured the new single will be released to coincide with the start of their residency at the hi-tech MSG Sphere in Vegas on September 29.
U2 played through Atomic City multiple times during the shoot for the crowd that had gathered there, plus a crew of hired extras.
“This is the world premiere of Atomic City, a rock ‘n’ roll 45-inch tradition of late 70s post-punk if you are interested … Blondie, The Clash,” Bono said to the audience.
He was joined by his bandmates the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr — though Mullen will not be performing at the band’s Sphere shows as he’s still recovering from surgery.
“I’m free, so unexpectedly!” Bono sang out to the 250 extras brought in to populate the stretch of Main Street in front of Plaza’s new Carousel Bar and facing Circa, Golden Gate and the SlotZilla zipline.
“I’m free, from what’s in front of me!”
Between takes, Bono craned to observe his light-bathed surroundings. “Hello, Mr. Plaza,” the front man said. “Hello, Circa.”
The song was dripping with Vegas flourishes, such as “I’ve got the key to the cages, waiting for my dice” and “I came here for the fight. I’m front row in Las Vegas. And there’s a big one on tonight.”
The vocals were live but music recorded, as Bono shouted at the start of one of the takes, “Roll track! C’mon!”
During the shoot, the band also performed I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For from their smash-hit album The Joshua Tree.
