A Des Champs, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Washington Post, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where jail staff said he remained in custody as of Wednesday night. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a news conference Wednesday that the attempt to scale the building was a “publicity stunt.” The incident occurred as the city prepares for nearly 400,000 visitors on Sunday, when the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will play in the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium. “We know these things are going to happen,” McMahill said, “and we’re going to deal with them as they come up and make sure we have the safest Super Bowl we’ve ever had.” Des Champs, who calls himself “Pro-Life Spider-Man” and A spokesperson for Sphere Entertainment, which operates the Sphere, said in a statement to The Post that “we are grateful to the local authorities for their support in this matter.” This is the second consecutive year that Des Champs has climbed a structure during Super Bowl week. In February 2023, he climbed the 40-story Chase building in Arizona, where the Super Bowl was held. This also isn’t his first time climbing a building in Las Vegas. In August 2021, he scaled the Aria, a 600-foot-tall hotel, to protest mask mandates during the coronavirus pandemic. Des Champs was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and trespassing, but prosecutors later dismissed the case, the Associated Press reported. Des Champs is scheduled to appear in court in Las Vegas on Thursday, according to jail records. Mark Maske contributed to this report.
