Why Tom Brady won’t be the next quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, the Aces go 3-0, and Darren Waller slings some dirt on his old coach. Let’s talk about what happened last week in Las Vegas sports (May 22 – 28).
The Golden Knights are on the verge of making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, but the Dallas Stars are in their way. It started with the Knights’ 3-2 loss in overtime on Thursday. The worst part is the Golden Knights matched Dallas point for point in the first two periods but let a goal pass in the overtime.
Fast forward to Saturday, and it was the third period where the Golden Knights let two goals get by to lose 4-2. Adin Hill tended the net for both games, marking some of his worst performances. Ivan Barbashev and Chandler Stephenson led the scoring, while Jonathon Marchessault and Jack Eichel contributed assists.
While the Golden Knights are on the verge of ending the series, they risk letting the Stars stick around. They need to complete the series soon, or one will start to wonder about the wear and tear. Ultimately, the Golden Knights have had a long road to the Stanely Cup playoffs, and every little loss counts. It also takes away their time to rest.
There are a lot of twists and turns unfolding during the offseason, and one of them had to be Darren Waller getting traded. Waller had even just married Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum, souring things further. Waller spoke out about being a part of the Giants organization and might have taken a shot at Josh McDaniels.
“So to offer input is a really cool thing because coaches and players have to be in partnership,” Waller told reporters when asked about what he likes about his new team. “We’re all together and shouldn’t be clashing with each other. We’re all going in the same direction.”
The Raiders eventually replaced him with Michael Mayer. It’s too early to tell whether this is the right move, but many people think Waller deserved better. Maybe his interview with reporters is a way of letting off steam about the trade.
The Aces played their first home game of the season at the Mandalay Bay Events Center and even received their championship rings. Las Vegas were so prepared for this game that they outscored the Sparks 31-13 in the first quarter.
They then widened the gap by another 13 points by halftime. The Aces eventually stormed their way to victory 93-65. This game has several key players, but A’ja Wilson showed why she won several awards last year. She put up 23 points, three assists, and six rebounds.
Kelsey Plum put up 19 points and contributed five rebounds. Kiah Stokes also had another decent game, bringing down nine rebounds and three points.
The Las Vegas Raiders bet a considerable amount on Jimmy Garroppollo, hoping he could lead them to a championship. Unfortunately, that plan has hit a speed bump due to an addendum in his contract. This is supposedly what lead to the one-day delay in his press conference, and it’s a big deal for the Raiders.
According to Pro Football Talks’ Mike Flori, the addendum gives the Raiders the right to waive Garroppollo if he doesn’t pass a physical before the season begins. They also reserve the right to terminate his contract for any reason related to his foot injury. There are even several other terms that could get him axed prematurely.
Keep in mind that the backup for Garoppollo is Brian Hoyer, and his backup is Aiden O’Connell. That’s not a lot of depth and will be a tough boat to navigate with the eighth most brutal schedule this season. Their season literally depends on Garroppollo passing his physical or the Raiders finding a team willing to make a deal.
Tom Brady has had a lot of firsts in his life, but never like this. In fact, Brady went from hoping to buy a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders to maybe playing for them. Believe it or not, that conspiracy theory is making its way around the league after the Jimmy Garroppollo news. Some even claim that the NFL owners would resist a move for Brady to go from part owner to player.
Unfortunately for those hoping Brady comes and saves the Raiders, sources say his ownership stake is only approved if he promises not to play. That means Brady will have a hard time convincing anyone to let him go from owner to quarterback.
