Tom Brady bets big on the Las Vegas Aces, Logan Thompson goes down with an injury and Becky Hammon adds another huge accolade to her resume. All on last week in Las Vegas sports (Mar 20 – 26).
The Las Vegas Aces are the new championship team in the WNBA, and everyone is taking notice of their potential. Tom Brady happens to be one of those people, and bought a stake in the franchise last week. The move makes him a minority owner of the organization and puts him in business with Mark Davis.
“I am very excited to be part of the Las Vegas Aces organization,” Brady said in a statement Thursday. “My love for women’s sports began at a young age when I would tag along to all my older sisters’ games — they were by far the best athletes in our house! We celebrated their accomplishments together as a family, and they remain a great inspiration to me.”
The Las Vegas Golden Knights have worked through an onslaught of injuries, but it keeps getting worse. In fact, Logan Thompson returned from a lower-body injury this week, only to go down against the Calgary flames in a 3-2 victory.
This comes after Thompson missed 18 games and paints a bleak picture for the playoffs. The Las Vegas offense has been holding together well under pressure but could be out of luck without a great goalie rotation. The incident might doom their postseason entirely if mishandled.
“It’s tough,” Vegas forward Ivan Barbashev said after Thursday’s victory against the Calgary Flames. “He was really good, especially coming back off of injury. He was great all game long. Tough bounce for him. He was really good today for us.”
Thompson got joined on the injury bench by Reily Smith, who also went down with a lower-body injury. The Golden Knights now continue their march to the playoffs with many pieces missing. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to this.
Derek Carr was released from his $121.5 million contract with the Raiders in February and later became a New Orleans Saint. While you would think there’s a lot of bad blood between the Raiders and the former quarterback, that’s apparently not the case. Carr had nothing but good things to say about his former team despite how things ended.
“I’ve got no hard feelings for them,” Carr said Friday at Southern Highlands Country Club. “Maybe there’s a difference of opinion in certain things, but that’s in anything. … I want Josh and Dave to have success.”
Vegas411 is saddened to share that free agent Foster Moreau was diagnosed with cancer last week. The news comes as the veteran tight end tested the free-agent waters hoping to find a new home. He later announced that he would be stepping away from football to focus on his fight against Cancer.
“During a routine physical conducted by the Saints’ medical team down in New Orleans, I’ve come to learn that I have Hodgkin’s lymphoma and will be stepping away from football,” he wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.
Despite parting ways at the end of the 2022-2023 season, Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler released a touching tribute to the veteran on social media. If nothing else, it proves that the Las Vegas Raiders are family, good times or bad.
“Foster is a tremendous person on and off the football field, and our immediate thoughts and concerns are with him as he begins to battle this new opponent, “McDaniels and Ziegler said in a social media post. “… know that the Raiders Family, teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Raider Nation will come together to support Foster and his family through this challenge, and we’re confident that he will get back doing what he loves most soon.”
Becky Hammon has accomplished more in one year than most people ever do. Not only is that evident by her becoming the first female coach in WNBA history, but also by winning a championship. In fact, Hammon and the Las Vegas Aces went on one of the best runs in recent memory.
That’s why it should come as no surprise that Hammon is being honored as one of USA Today’s Women of the year.
