Las Vegas sports takes a weird turn this week with a lot of stories you probably aren’t expecting. From the Golden Knights costing Vegas sports books millions and Jimmy Garoppolo talking about aliens at training camp, this is last week in Las Vegas sports (July 24 – 30).
The Nevada gaming board reported last week that local sportsbooks lost $6.6 million in hockey bets during June’s Stanley Cup Finals matchup between the Florida Panthers and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
“Yeah, that’s a significant loss for a sports betting category, definitely,” Michael Lawton, senior economic analyst for the Nevada Gaming Control Board, said. “From my understanding, the overall consensus is that the town is more happy for the Knights than they are about sports books losing money in the month of June.”
Jimmy Garoppolo arrived at training camp last week and is finally making headlines for a good reason! Everyone’s talking about a conversation he reportedly had with Punter, AJ Cole, and others about UFOs. This comes only days after the government UFO hearings.
While this is an interesting conversation to have, we can only remain hopeful that he is also figuring out ways to produce on the field. Fortunately for Garoppollo, teammates describe a relaxed vibe with the former San Francisco quarterback. He seems to be winning more supporters by the day. Maybe he wins over the aliens too?
Joshua Jacobs hasn’t come to an agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders and could sit out training camp as a result. Despite this news, it’s reported that Jacobs was offered $12 million a year to stay with the Raiders. The contract would make him the fifth highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Mike Garafolo appeared on the Rich Eisen show with the claim. It’s unknown whether this is true, but it marks an interesting point in negotiations. Why wouldn’t Jacobs take that deal? Maybe he thinks he can get more after training camp, or was he unhappy with the number of years on the contract?
The Las Vegas Aces are in big trouble after Riquina Williams was charged with nine counts of domestic battery last week. The counts include allegations of strangulation, coercion by threat, and assault with a weapon. Williams was already sitting out most of this season with a back injury and is now barred from the team. The Las Vegas Aces have released the following statement on the incident.
“The Las Vegas Aces were made aware of domestic violence charges against a member of our team, Riquna Williams,” the team said Wednesday in a statement. “As an organization, we condemn domestic violence of any kind. At this time, Riquna Williams will be precluded from participating in team activities. Our thoughts are with the parties involved in this situation.”
There are a lot of question marks surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo, which is why he’s so interesting to watch. One of the biggest questions is whether he would gel well with his new teammates. Fortunately for Garoppolo, that is a resounding yes and everyone seems impressed by him. Garoppolo and Davantae Adams seem to be developing chemistry on the field.
The two are from the same draft, and Adams also has Super Bowl experience on his side. Garoppolo had the following to say after his first workout with Adams last week.
“On one of the routes I threw him, I asked him if he was going full speed. Because he’s just so smooth, man, it looks effortless,” Garoppolo claims. “I thought I overthrew him on one of the deep balls and he ended up getting to it. So, it was just things like that. It’s a luxury as a quarterback to have a guy like that.”
