Exciting news for WNBA fans, a sad farewell from Derek, and a whole lot more. Here’s everything that happened last week in Las Vegas Sports (Jan 9 – 15).
Las Vegas will host the 2023 WNBA All-Star games July 15 – 26 at the Michelob Ultra Arena! The event will feature a three-point contest, a fan experience, and the All-star game. This announcement marks the first time since 2021 the event has been held at the Michelob Ultra Arena and the third time that Sin City has hosted it.
“The WNBA is thrilled to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star 2023, to Las Vegas, a city that showed such incredible support for the Aces and the WNBA throughout last season, especially during the WNBA Finals presented by YouTube TV when the Aces brought the city its first professional sports championship,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
Tickets go on sale on January 19 at 10 am.
Bruce Cassidy has been announced as a coach for the Pacific Division in the 2023 NHL All-star game! The event is taking place in Sunrise, Florida, this February and features players from around the league. Cassidy earned the honor when the Golden Knights compiled the most points in their division by January 10th of this year.
“It’s always an honor,” Cassidy said of the new role. “I think it’s a team and staff award… We’re going because of our record. I coached the team, but it’s the players on the ice that achieve that record, so it’s a credit to them. I appreciate their effort and what they’ve done so far.”
While calling anyone the next Dale Earnhardt is a controversial thing, Las Vegas native Kyle Busch is probably one of the best comparisons. Not only is this due to him having over 200 wins in NASCAR, but also because of his bold driving.
Busch is also known for his off tracks antics, which have made him the most polarizing man in the sport. The comparisons continued on a recent edition of NASCAR Race hub, where Clint Bowyer compared Rowdy to the Intimidator. Bowyer also claimed this could be Busch’s opportunity to win another championship.
“I think this man is exactly headed in the direction he needs to be going,” Bowyer said. “I think putting Kyle Busch in this car is the Dale Earnhardt driving style that he’s used to having behind the wheel. Now if they can keep their watches on, and get through the end of the year. I think they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with.”
Joshua Jacobs had an exciting 2022 season, to say the least! He earned the NFL rushing title and helped the Raiders to several victories.
“For me, it’s got to make sense,” Jacobs said last Monday, via ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez. “But this is obviously where I want to be. Coming in, I remember sitting down with [defensive end] Maxx [Crosby] and all these guys and talking about the Raiders organization and the culture and wanting to be part of the change.”
Jacobs claims he wants to stay in Las Vegas, but he also cautions that his new contract would have to make sense. The ball is now in the Raiders’ court.
Derek Carr announced last week that he will be parting ways with the Las Vegas Raiders after nine seasons. Carr had previously left the team facility following his benching in order to not be a distraction.
“It breaks my heart I didn’t get an opportunity to say goodbye in person,” Carr wrote on Instagram, “We certainly have been on a roller coaster in our 9 years together. We had our share of both heartbreaking moments and thrilling game-winning drives, and it always felt like you were there next to me.”
