An injury for Logan Thompson, comments about Derek Carr, and more. Here’s what happened last week in Las Vegas sports (Feb 6 – 12).
NASCAR is allowing Kyle Busch to compete in the 2023 Daytona 500 after he was detained in Mexico last month for gun possession. The Las Vegas native was released on an undisclosed bond, but a judge later sentenced him to three and half years in jail if convicted. According to Autoweek, NASCAR officials have looked into the matter and determined Busch didn’t violate their rulebook.
“Discovery of the handgun led to my detainment while the situation was resolved. I was not aware of Mexican law and had no intention of bringing a handgun into Mexico,” Busch claims. “When it was discovered, I fully cooperated with the authorities, accepted the penalties, and returned to North Carolina.”
The Las Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Minnesota Wild 5-1, but the victory comes at a price. Logan Thompson went down with a lower-body injury. Thompsons’ status got updated to being week-to-week on Thursday, forcing the team to rely on backup, Adin Hill.
The Golden Knights are also taking the extra step of bringing Laurent Brossoit to assist Hill. Whether it is enough to keep them on top of the Pacific Division or not remains to be seen, but it’s their only hope.
The Las Vegas Aces have now acquired Candace Parker and are over the moon about possibilities. Parker is joining an all-star cast that includes, A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, and several others. The addition of Parker might be enough for the Aces to defend their championship.
“Candace could probably play one through five,” Aces general manager Natalie Williams said in an interview. “She’ll help us in so many areas… Candace was where we needed to go as one of our big-time pieces.”
Joshua Jacobs saw a lot of things in 2022 and the Derek Carr controversy is one of them. Jacobs came on the PFT Live Show where he opened up about the situation and described it as weird. He claims that he knew something was coming but didn’t think the team was going to bench Carr.
“It was definitely weird, man,” Jacobs said on Thursday’s episode of PFT Live. “Just like, you can kind of see the signs that something was going to happen. The season we were having — we lost that last game [to the Steelers] where we knew we weren’t going to go to the playoffs because we had to win out. We knew that our playoff hopes were over.”
Who will replace Derek Carr as QB of the Las Vegas Raiders? That question has been driving Sin City crazy and has led to endless speculation about who will take over at the helm. While many are hoping that Aaron Rodgers heads west, one NFL executive seems to think it wouldn’t be a good fit.
“Vegas would be fine for [Rodgers],” an NFL executive told the Athletic in an interview about the Derek Carr situation. “It just seems like a weird fit, Rodgers’ personality and Josh McDaniels. I think Josh would probably rather develop his own guy than have Rodgers, and I think he’d rather have (Jimmy) Garoppolo than Rodgers.”
