Last Week in Las Vegas Sports (Apr 24 – 30)

The Las Vegas Raiders choose draft picks, Joshua Jacobs makes a very concerning social media post, and the Toronto Raptors get permission to talk to Becky Hammon about their head coaching vacancy. Let’s talk about what happened last week in Las Vegas sports (Apr 24 – 30).

#5 Becky Hammon to speak with Toronto Raptors about head coaching job

Becky Hammon has been the Las Vegas Aces head coach for one season, which is why it’s so hard to believe she would leave. Unfortunately for anyone hoping for a back-to-back championship, there seems to be a massive roadblock.

ESPN.com reported last week that the Aces have granted the Toronto Raptors permission to talk to Hammon about their head coaching vacancy. If she accepts the job, she will become the first female head coach in NBA history and have a chance to implement the same changes she has with the Aces.

While the possibility is exciting, especially in the male-dominated space of the NBA, it raises the question of what happens to the Aces. Or what the fallout will be. Last week, Hammon said her focus is on her current team.

“Today is completely about how wonderful the Aces are, and I will keep all the focus [on them] because they deserve it,” Hammon said. “They earned it. This building has earned it. [Owner] Mark [Davis] has earned it. So I’m not commenting on anything about the boys. It’s all about the women.”

#4 Las Vegas Golden Knights defeat Winnipeg Jets to move past first round

The Las Vegas Golden Knights are advancing to the next round of the NHL playoffs after defeating the Winnipeg Jets in a 4-1 series. The Golden Knights finished the series on Thursday with a 4-1 beating on the Jets. This is their first playoff series win since 2021 and is a welcomed sight for Golden Knights fans.

The Golden Knights might have lost the opening game to the Jets in a 5-1 beatdown but went on to win the next three straight matchups, including one that went into triple on the road. Despite the odds against them, the team rallied for a last-second score. The Golden Knights now move on to face the Edmonton Oilers in the next round.

#3 Josh Jacobs posts on social media about not coming back anytime soon

The Joshua Jacobs saga continues, and things have taken a very unexpected turn. Jacobs, who had his fifth-year option declined at the beginning of the year, responded by setting the rushing record that year. That didn’t turn out to be enough, and the Raiders ultimately franchise tagged him.

If Jacobs agrees, he will receive $10 million next season, but he might want out. Jacobs posted a very interesting message on Twitter, stating that he “wasn’t coming back anytime soon.” At the very least, this has to have fans a little worried about where Jacobs’s head is regarding his future with the Raiders.

#2 Logan Thompson still not skating at practice

While the Golden Knights are advancing to the next round of the playoffs, it’s not all good news in Sin City. For example, it now appears that Logan Thompson will be out for a while and might not keep the starting job. That honor could go to Laurent Brossoit, who anchored the team during their series against the Jets.

According to CBS Fantasy Hockey News, “Thompson has played in just one of the Knights’ last 33 contests and appears to be no closer to getting back into action. Even once cleared to play, Thompson could struggle to steal back the crease considering Laurent Brossoit has won three straight postseason contests. At this point, Thompson should probably be considered out indefinitely, at least until he gets back on the ice.”

#1 Las Vegas Raiders draft recap: Raiders score baby Gronk!

The Las Vegas Raiders came into the 2023 NFL draft with rumors of taking a QB in the first round. Instead, they started things off by selecting Texas Tech edge Tyree Wilson. That pick is great news for the Raiders’ defense, which really struggled to get to the quarterback in 2022. He could serve an immediate impact if he stands out during training camp and the preseason.

The Raiders then moved on to offense, where they drafted Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer, nicknamed Baby Gronk for his size and abilities. This should be a great addition to this already stacked wide receiver depth chart, and it will be hard to miss with guys like this!

The rest of the selections are as follows.

  • #70 3rd-round Defensive Linemen. Byron Young: Alabama.
  • #100 3rd round (Compensatory pick) Wide receiver Tre Tucker. Cincinnati
  •  #104 4th round Defensive Back Jokorian Bennett. Maryland
  • #135 4th round (Compensatory pick) Quarterback, Aiden O’Conner Purdue
  • #170 5th round (Compensatory pick) Defensive Back Christopher Smith II Georgia
  • #203 6th round Linebacker, Amari Burney. Florida
  • #231 7th-round Defensive lineman.Nesta Jade Silveria Arizona State
