A day after celebrating its grand inauguration on the Las Vegas Strip, the MSG Sphere revealed a $98.4 million deficit for the quarter that ended on September 30, a financial statement that has caused some agitation in the entertainment sector.
This revelation comes on the heels of the resignation of Sphere Entertainment’s Chief Financial Officer, Gautam Ranj, approximately a week before the financial report was released.
According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Ranj stepped down after serving as the CFO for 11 months. The filing explicitly stated that his departure was not linked to any disputes with the company’s auditors or any member of the management regarding accounting principles, practices, financial statement disclosure, or internal controls.
She is taking over as the interim CFO is Greg Brunner, the Senior Vice President, who assumed the role on November 3. The sudden change in financial leadership has added a layer of uncertainty to the situation.
During the reported quarter, the company generated $4.1 million in event revenue and an additional $2.6 million from advertising and suite licensing associated with the Sphere’s massive exterior screen. Despite these revenue streams, the substantial loss raises questions about the venue’s financial viability.
CEO James Dolan, however, remains optimistic about the future. Addressing shareholders in the wake of the operating loss, Dolan emphasized that the company is building positive momentum and is strategically positioned to drive long-term value.

He pointed to the MSG Sphere’s impressive debut with U2’s multi-month residency, showcasing the venue’s groundbreaking LED and audio system, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and social media.
Dolan acknowledged the interest from the artist community following U2’s residency and revealed ongoing discussions with artists across various genres for potential future performances.
He expressed confidence in hosting two additional residencies in the second half of the fiscal year, promising more details soon.
Before its official opening night, the MSG Sphere captivated Vegas crowds with its exterior LED system, featuring stunning visuals. The venue also leveraged its massive screen for promotional collaborations, including partnerships with YouTube’s NFL Sunday Ticket and the Universal Pictures animated film “Trolls Band Together.”
While the financial report raises concerns, the company highlighted that ticket sales for Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming “Postcard from Earth” experience occurred in the current quarter and were not reflected in the latest financial disclosure.
As the MSG Sphere navigates these economic challenges, industry observers will closely watch how the venue’s leadership and strategic initiatives unfold in the coming months.
