5 Things Worrying Las Vegas Sports Fans (July 2023)
5 Things Worrying Las Vegas Sports Fans (July 2023)

Las Vegas sports fans have a lot to be worried about right now. This includes the ongoing Jimmy Garroppollo situation, Becky Hammon possibly leaving for the NBA, and controversial decisions being made by the Golden Knights.

#5 Joshua Jacobs holding out for a better deal

Joshua Jacobs is a cornerstone of the Las Vegas Raiders organization, but he still isn’t treated like one. Instead, the Raiders have declined his fifth-year option and want to franchise tag him for the year. This is shameful after Jacobs set the rushing record in 2023 and a bad precedent for future players. This raises concerns about whether Jacobs will stay past 2024 after getting treated this way.

#4 Potential off-season moves for the Las Vegas Golden Knights

After seven years of chasing the prize, the Golden Knights are finally Stanley Cup Champions. A lot has changed between their first year and now. Las Vegas has made some really disastrous roster decisions, including the year they traded Marc-Andre Fleury and kept Robin Lehner as a backup. Fleury had just won the Vezina trophy that year and produced a much better record.

The Golden Knights also recently traded original roster member Riley Smith to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a future draft pick. If this indicates the changes to come, Golden Knights fans might need to prepare for some difficult decisions.

#3 Kurt Busch never competing again

Kurt Busch has been sidelined with a concussion for almost a year after a  qualifying crash left him with concussion-like symptoms. Since then, the former Cup Series champion and Las Vegas native has worked diligently to get back into the race car, but NASCAR still hasn’t cleared him. The sport takes concussion injuries much more seriously, making getting cleared difficult.

And now fans may never see Busch behind the wheel again. There is some hope that he will make one-off appearances in the future, but his full-time career seems to be over.

#2 Becky Hammon leaving for an NBA team

Becky Hammon is the glue holding the Las Vegas Aces together, and losing her is almost unthinkable. The only problem, however, is that she has very little left to accomplish in the WNBA. Hammon already ran roughshod over the league to win the championship in 2022 and continues to do so in 2023.

If she wins another championship with the Aces, there’s not much left for her to do. NBA teams have requested an interview with Hammon in the past, which means she is open to the idea. Her ultimate goal is to compete as a head coach in the NBA, and Las Vegas seems to be a launching point for that.

#1 The Jimmy Garoppollo situation

The Las Vegas Raiders’ entire season depends on Jimmy Garroppollo. He finally passed his physical but the risk of future injury is creating a lot of stress. The team’s only backups are Brian Hoyer, Aidan O’Conner, and Chase Gabers, who are all less-than-ideal candidates. They certainly aren’t at Garoppollo’s level.

Now many are wondering how things will play out.
