5 Biggest Mistakes in Las Vegas Sports
5 Biggest Mistakes in Las Vegas Sports

What were these coaches thinking? Here are the five biggest mistakes in Las Vegas sports last year.

#5 The Las Vegas Aces trading Dearica Hamby

The Las Vegas Aces traded Dearica Hamby to the Los Angeles Sparks this offseason in a move that surprised everyone. Hamby was a crucial part of the Aces’ offense and had seen them through some of their worst times. Furthermore, she helped the team win its first championship in 2022.

Fast forward to 2023, and Hamby is unhappy about how things ended with the Aces. She now alleges that the team questioned her commitment over a pregnancy. She also claims that the organization gives players money under the table as an extra incentive.

The Aces have made countless mistakes here, and it will take a while to get everything straightened out.

#4 Kyle Busch continuing to race in lower-tiered series

Las Vegas native Kyle Busch is a future NASCAR legend, and that’s why it’s so disappointing to see him still compete in lower-tiered series. While Cup Series drivers competing in Xfinity and Craftsman truck series is allowed, Busch promised his fans that he would stop once he reached his magical 200 number. That quickly snowballed into him competing a few times a year, supposedly for the fun of it.

He even recently won a Craftsman Truck Series race this year in dominating fashion. Not only does this take money and resources away from the younger talent, but it’s also a slap in the face to everyone Busch promised he would stop. If Busch wants to keep racing in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series, he could have at least come out and said it.

#3 The Las Vegas Knights having so many goalies to choose from in the playoffs

The Las Vegas Golden Knights now have Logan Thompson, Laurent Brossoit, Jonathan Quick, and Adin Hill as goalies. While some might find this to be an embarrassment of riches on their part, it raises the question of who to start when the playoffs come around. Then, who to have as their backup?

The Golden Knights have given so many different goalies the spotlight this year that it’s hard to know who will make for the right combination. For example, Logan Thompson has had a great year but has gone down twice in a month with an injury.

#2 Bringing Candance Parker to the Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces signed Candance Parker during the offseason, and there’s an argument to be made that this could be a risk.

As we all know, chemistry is a big deal on every sports team, and it will be interesting to see how these players interact. A’ja Wilson is used to being their star player and putting in many of the Aces’ shots. Will she be content with moving the ball around more? Then there’s Parker and what she expects from the situation.

The problem with super teams is that they form superegos. Becky Hammon commands with championship-caliber leadership, but can she fit another piece into this dynamic puzzle?

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders trading Darren Waller to the Giants for a draft pick

The Las Vegas Raiders have made some interesting moves during the offseason, and trading Darren Waller is one of them. Now, reports indicate that the Raiders were shopping Waller around during the preseason but declined two deals. Fast forward to 2022, however, and he’s now traded to the Giants for the 100th pick in the 2023 draft.

While Waller has suffered injuries throughout his tenure with the Raiders, he has been a solid production maker when healthy. For the Raiders to give him the axe after one season under the Josh McDaniels regime is ridiculous. What makes the situation worse is that the Raiders made the trade only a week after Waller’s wedding to Las Vegas Aces player Kesley Pum.
